\nDr. Heald is a professor of cell and developmental biology in the UC Berkeley Department of Molecular and Cell Biology. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, she is recognized for her work on biological size control and her use of cytoplasmic extracts prepared from eggs of the African clawed frog Xenopus laevis to study how the mitotic spindle forms and scales to different sizes.\n

\nFor this lecture, Dr. Heald will discuss the power of amphibian systems for investigating molecular mechanisms underlying fundamental biological processes including cell division, size scaling across and within species, physiological effects of genome size, and hybrid incompatibility that underlies speciation.\n
