This month, three spacecraft arrived at Mars to study past, present, and future possibilities of life on the red planet. Meanwhile, entrepreneurs have had incredible success in the past decade in lowering the cost of access to space and are making plans for "space hotels" and trips to the Moon for private citizens. The era of space travel finally may be upon us. And yet, can the human body handle life in space?

In the first part of this Demystifying Medicine course, Dr. Mark Shelhamer of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and past Chief Scientist of NASA Human Research Program will discuss the health challenges from an extended stay in space. Unfortunately, cosmic and solar radiation conspire with the microgravity environment to make space travel an exceedingly dangerous activity. In complementing Dr. Shelhamer's talk, science writer Christopher Wanjek will discuss novel ways to overcome these challenges and outline a feasible path forward for humans to venture to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
